Occupational Therapy for Children and Adolescents
Your first session at Health and Performance International (HPI) will consist of a thorough intake of your past and present medical histories, as well as your current complaints and your perception of what’s going on with your emotional, mental and physical health. We will also record some of your physiological processes (biofeedback) such as: heart rate, respiration, skin conductance, muscle activity, and peripheral temperature. Additionally, we will record your brain waves under various conditions (EEG evaluation).
This data will allow us to customize a plan of care that addresses your personal needs and goals, as well as your idiosyncratic, psycho-physiological functioning.
We will discuss your short-term and long-term goals to, together, build a powerful and clear vision of what you want to achieve.
We will also start designing a home exercise program (HEP), which we will modify as you progress toward your goals.

Your thoughts are connected to how you feel. We help you to solve present day problems, identifying distorted thinking that causes emotional discomfort. We will also give you homework to ease your intrapersonal and interpersonal relationship and to lead you towards positive and meaningful relationships. |
Biofeedback modalities will help you to analyze behavior, define problems, and select goals. You will learn how to connect thoughts, feelings and behaviors and how to set realistic and attainable goals. Along this empowering process, we will also explore unconscious and conscious motivations.
We will provide you with unconditional positive regard, empathic understanding, and the genuineness necessary for your growth and evolution.
•Biofeedback and Neurofeedback Training![]() |
Biofeedback training uses state-of-the-art technology to help you to learn how to control or manage your physiological processes and/or responses. Sensitive instruments record and measure, in real time, your physiological processes and feed them back to you. These processes are: muscle activities, temperature, skin conductance, heart rate, peripheral blood volume, and respiration. |
Neurofeedback training: sensors placed on your scalp and ear lobes transmit brain activity to the computer, which measures and records the frequencies being used to perform a task. The different frequency bands are fed back to you in the form of animated screens, video games, madalas, and EEG graphs. To achieve brain wave changes, you will play music, a video game or animate a screen with your brain waves, and you will reach the desired mental state and performance level.
•Relaxation and Mental Techniques![]() |
We use different techniques to teach you to relax your body and focus your mind on the present moment. You can significantly reduce stress and pain using the power of your imagination—your inner creativity. You will learn programmed and guided visualization, therefore stimulating and utilizing all your senses. You will learn autogenic training to talk to your body and have it listen and respond to a message. |
When you know that you are moving out of balance, you will take these steps to return to a harmonious state of being.
Control follows awareness—being mindful of ourselves as we flow through each day. In autogenic training you will purposefully induce specific physical sensations that are associated with the relaxation response. This induced state of calm and relaxation is what Herbert Benson termed “remembered wellness.”
You will learn different kinds of breathing, such as breathing abdominally or diaphragmatic breathing, and its effect on your heart rate and other physiological processes.
•Manual Therapy![]() |
For those suffering from minor to severe fibromyalgia or myofascia pain syndromes, we give myofascial release, a very gentle but powerful manual technique that releases the tight fascia surrounding your muscles and joints. Once the fascia is released, the pain—at rest or to the touch—can decrease from 50 to 100 percent. |
of motion as well as different muscle techniques to engage the weak muscles and reduce tone in the hypertonic ones.
•Occupational Therapy![]() |
Occupational therapy is the therapeutic use of work, self-care, and play activities to increase development and prevent disability. It may include adaptation of tasks or environments to achieve maximum independence and to enhance the quality of life. |
occupational therapist for an illness, injury or disability present from birth or onset at a later time, we will provide you with an interventions-assessment, functional activities, biofeedback and neurofeedback training, therapeutic exercises, and manual techniques that will help you regain cognitive and sensory-motor functions, maintain levels of functioning, or make accommodations for any deficits you may be experiencing.
•Occupational Therapy for Children and Adolescents![]() |
You and your chidren live in the Upper West Side in NYC and your child suffers from a learning disability: ADD, ADHD, anxiety, autism, or sleep disturbance.
